As far as holiday self-care for mental health and shame here are a couple of things from Sarah:
- Take breaks. Lots of time with family can be intense, so make sure there’s down time. Maybe take a walk or offer to pick something up from the store. Give yourself a breather when you feel you need it.
- Pick your battles. There’s still likely to be discord in politically diverse families and while we all must remain diligent in our social justice quests, conservative Uncle Joe probably won’t change his mind because of that one fact you share. People don’t respond to facts anyway…they respond to feelings. I HIGHLY recommend Sarah Silverman’s show “I Love You, America” because she’s done an excellent job of making space for conversation and empathy even when we strongly disagree. And it’s just hysterical at the same time.
- Be mindful. Family can push our buttons more fiercely and quickly than anyone else and shame is often one of the strong emotions that gets kicked up by our nearest and dearest. Shame wants us to either fight, flee or people-please, so when you feel those urges coming on, take a time out! Excuse yourself from the moment until you’re able to get back to your authentic self and respond mindfully.
- Reach out. When you do experience shame, the best thing to do is connect with someone who can understand. Keep in mind the friends you have who have lost family members – they’re in the unique space of not having do deal with the hassle of family, but may be dealing with grief or loneliness. Give those folks a call to see how they’re doing and that’ll help you disconnect from whatever crazy is being stirred up within you as well.

About Sarah Buino

Sarah Buino, LCSW, CADC, CDWF is the founder of Head/Heart Therapy, Inc. She is a licensed clinical social worker, certified addictions counselor and a Certified Daring WayTM facilitator. She holds a masters degree from Loyola University in Chicago and specializes in shame and substance abuse.
Sarah has served as a therapist at Presence Behavioral Health’s Addicted Professionals Program, working with attorneys, executives, nurses, and physicians struggling with substance use disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and trauma.
Before Presence, Sarah performed clinical work with adolescents and their families at Alternatives, Inc., a community mental health agency in Chicago that’s widely recognized for its youth-driven programming.
Sarah became part of Loyola University’s School of Social Work adjunct faculty in the fall of 2015. She currently teaches Introduction to Alcohol and Other Drug Disorders and Clinical Practice in Addictions to master’s level students. She is committed to relating the pharmacology and clinical work of addiction in a relateable way to foster passion for chemical dependency work.
Sarah was honored by NASW’s Illinois Chapter by being awarded Emerging Leader for 2017. The Emerging Leader is an “early” career social worker who has demonstrated exemplary leadership, expertise, and dedication to the profession in the state of Illinois, whose contributions enhance practice knowledge and/or the capacity of the profession and the human service to obtain resources and influence.
Sarah has always valued authenticity as a critical component of whole-hearted living. Since hearing Dr. Brené Brown speak in the winter of 2009, she has been sharing the concepts of shame-resiliency, authenticity and vulnerability with her clients. She has completed training with Brené Brown’s team and is a Certified Daring WayTM facilitator (CDWF).
Sarah is also knowledgeable about the benefits of various alternative and complementary techniques for wellbeing, and is a certified Reiki Master. Reiki is a form of energy healing that encourages the release of oxytocin to reduce pain and increase the body’s ability to repair itself mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually.
In her spare time, Sarah is a musician and sings in a variety of musical groups around the city of Chicago. She loves fitness: yoga, weight lifting, and just about anything that gets her off the couch. She also loves tattoos and changing her hair cut and color often.
