CI073: Where Have I been? Updates & Invitations

I just sort of went into this existential crisis of — What is The Creative Impostor? Why do I need this show?

It has been a while since I have released an episode here for you. My last episode was this past summer with the fabulous Matt Marr. It was a really good one.

And now… I have to tell you something really strange has happened or is happening, which is that I did not plan to take a hiatus with this show.

In fact over on my other podcast, Podcast Envy, all about how to craft a show that matters, I have recently advised podcasters that if they are going to take a hiatus from their show, they should tell their listeners. They should announce it. They should set some expectations so that you’re not just leaving your listeners hanging and I did NOT do that myself.

Truth be told, I have been feeling guilty about it ever since I dispensed that oh so sage advice so I decided to come here just to check in and say hi. I haven’t forgotten you. I haven’t abandoned you. And I’m so so so happy and grateful that you have not abandoned me either and I know this because for some reason even though I have not released a new episode since summer, I have over a thousand downloads of The Creative Impostor per month since then — amazing!!!

So where HAVE I been and why the hiatus and what can you do if you miss me?

I’m here. I haven’t disappeared.

I’m producing Podcast Envy. If you are interested in the topic of podcasting specifically, there’s some really good stuff happening over on that show and you should definitely subscribe. I’m also over at Power Your Story and while it’s not me, it’s my high school student mentees who are producing that show and we have a ton of new content in the pipeline.

And I’ve been over at Key Change: Creating Opera For All Voices with the Santa Fe Opera. This is an integrated podcasting-opera-storytelling experience all about an initiative through the community outreach and education department at the Santa Fe Opera called Opera For All Voices, which is all about commissioning new works centered around diversity and inclusion and having the conversation about what diversity and inclusion means in the opera world and just in the arts world in the United States in general.

What does American Opera mean?

What does contemporary opera mean?

What does it look like?

What does it sound like?

What kinds of stories are we telling?

Who is telling those stories?

The first season is out now and where are in the depths of editing season 2, which will be coming out this spring. So there’s been a lot of work going on at The Creative Impostor STUDIOS and that is the primary reason for the hiatus on The Creative Impostor PODCAST.

The other reason became clear to me when I went on hiatus unexpectedly was that I am getting bored.

I mean not with the idea of The Creative Impostor, nor the brand, nor podcasting in general, but just the format. I mean, I’ve been doing it for a few years. I have some great interviews. I love doing interviews. I love doing the solo episodes. But now that I’m doing interviews over on Podcast Envy, it kind of feels like why do I have two shows? And in fact, I’ve been working with a business coach who is Robyn Conley Downs of the Feel Good Effect podcast (one of the podcasts that I edit.)

And Robyn actually said to me in a coaching, “Why do you have two shows? Do you need to have two shows? Maybe you should just focus on one.”

At first I was like, “NO! I can’t I can’t only have one. I can’t let go The Creative Impostor. That’s my baby. That’s my first show. I love that show and I have more listeners on that show!”

But from a business perspective, the show doesn’t really make that much sense anymore because my business has become specifically about supporting other podcasters and organizations and individuals who WANT to podcast.

And so I just sort of went into this existential crisis of what is The Creative Impostor? Why do I have it? Why do I need this show? What is different about it than Podcast Envy?

And I also have been thinking for a long time now that I’ve done a lot of interviews and I feel really comfortable and confident in this format and most podcasts that we listen to our either solo produced shows co-hosted shows or interview shows…

I keep thinking what else is possible with the medium of podcasting.

What else is possible in audio? I mean, yeah, we also have. Narrative fiction podcasts like Gimlet’s Homecoming and narrative nonfiction podcasts like Serial, but there has to be something else — some kind of experimental immersive audio experience.

I don’t know exactly what it is yet, but I want to do something really different.

I want to be more creative to be honest. So that’s where I’m going with this. More is coming. But I don’t know what and I don’t know.

In the meantime, here are a few ways that I would love to connect with you:

  1. Email me. Send me an email and let me know why you listen to the show. So no like formal survey or anything. Just email me. Why do you listen to the show? What do you love most about it or what do you get out of it? So that I can make sure that my new content direction is aligned with what you love and what you want and with you.
  2. Join my Facebook Community where we create social support for content creators with inspiring prompts, opportunities for you to share your work, talk about money and more.
  3. If you are thinking of starting your own podcast, consider doing it together with me and a few friends in the Podcast Envy Launch Pod starting January 2019.
  4. If you already HAVE a podcast and are ready to grow in a meaningful way and make connections, consider the VIP Circle.

Happy birthday to me this week Wednesday! I hope to hear from you ASAP for #podcastgratitude.  I’d love to see you for real, for real via Zoom meeting in either the Launch Pod or the VIP Circle in January of 2019.

Should I take a break? What to do with your podcast over the holidays

Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Year’s… oh my!

The holidays. They are here. As a self-employed entrepreneur, I have noticed that typically around this time of year, people drop off the face of the earth.

Business gets really slow.
Nobody’s responding so much on social media.
Everyone’s running around all distracted.

It’s getting cold in the Midwest and sometimes snowy and I don’t really like that kind of weather. I just want to hole up in my house and do nothing except… well… good thing I make podcasts because I can do that from here.

In any case the question inevitably comes up for podcasters (usually accompanied by mild distress to pure panic):

What do I do with my show over the holidays?

Should I take a break? Should I publish old episodes? Am I going to lose listeners if I disappear for a few weeks?

The answer is right here in this episode for you. Want to know what it is?

Okay, holiday time podcasts — what to do with your show? Here is the answer that you have been waiting for…

Do whatever you want. It’s your show.

There are two schools of thought around this:

  1. People are super busy and distracted around the holidays and nobody’s listening to podcasts and your numbers for the episodes that you release in this time period are going to be lower than normal.
  2. A lot of people have time off. They’re traveling in cars and planes and trains and they have so much time to listen to podcasts. Since a bunch of podcasters are not producing new content at this time, yours has a greater opportunity to stand out. People will be looking for new shows to listen to because their queue won’t be as full as normal with their usual shows.

Both are true.

I’m in camp #2 — always always sad that it seems like there is no good new content around the holiday time. I’m always looking for something and I end up discovering a bunch of new shows at that time.

So I would say it’s completely up to you.

A few ideas to consider:

  1. You could stick with your original plan — keep publishing. If you do this, I would encourage you to maybe think about some solo episodes that you can release if you typically do interviews. Your interview guests may or may not have as much time to promote and share the episode during the holidays, or they might be taking a social media break or whatever, but they may not be able to promote it as fresh out of the gate as you would normally like for your podcast guests to do.

So if you have some really juicy interviews, unless they are timely and relevant to the season, you may want to push those to 2019 when there is so much time to promote things.

  2. Think of some short form content that you could release if your episodes tend to be a little bit longer. Are there any relevant seasonal topics that you could discuss that could still be evergreen? For example, gratitude is always evergreen even though we only think of it this time of year.

Ask yourself how you can title those episodes in such a way that people might specifically be looking for those kinds of things at the end of the year? I’m thinking not necessarily of your regular podcast listeners and subscribers, but new people who are in that Oh-my-gosh-My-favorite-podcasts-have-no-new-content-Whatever-will-I-listen-to phase and they’re searching around by keywords to find new shows.

  3. Consider your release schedule. So you may continue to release a weekly show if that’s your publishing schedule, but if you typically release on Thursdays and Thursday is Thanksgiving Day, maybe you release on Wednesday, or maybe you release something special for Black Friday, or if you typically release on whatever day Christmas Falls this year or New Year’s Day, maybe you want to shift that or maybe not maybe it’s totally fine to release on the actual holiday. There are no rules except…

  4. If you have not launched your show yet and you would like to launch, let’s say, January 1st 2019… Please be advised that the good folks at your hosting company (i.e. Libsyn) probably take a holiday break. So if you have any tech issues or troubleshooting issues, there may be a delay in addressing them.

Also keep in mind that the good folks at Apple Podcasts definitely take a holiday break. And in fact, they’ve already emailed all of their current podcast producers about their holiday breaks. They usually send us deadlines like if you want your show to go live the first week of January, you must submit it for approval by such and such date. They didn’t do that this year. They just simply gave us the dates where nobody is going to be doing any work or responding to anything which is basically the second half of December.

So if you want something to go live in early January, I would recommend that you are submitting your new show for approval by the first week of December or NOW!

  5. You could definitely take a break for the holidays and no one would blame you if you are going to take a break (and you probably won’t lose any subscribers.)

You could tell your listeners that you’re going to take a break and when they can expect a new episode and what it’s going to be to get them excited. So they have something to look forward to in January when you come back.

I saw somebody who recommended other shows to check out for their audience:

Hey, I’m going to take a break from this time to this time some other shows that I’ve been listening to that I think that you would really love.

Then shout out some shows for them to check out, which is a really cool community building and value adding way to make sure that your listeners don’t forget about you because then when they do go check out that show, they will think about you and be grateful to you when they discover and love that new show that you recommended. Think of it as filling your karmic bank account!

  6. Some people like to pull episodes from the archive to republish over the weeks ahead so that there’s something new in the feed.

I have mixed feelings about this. I have done it ONE time on my other show, The Creative Impostor, and it was fine. I kind of get annoyed mildly annoyed, however, when other shows post archival episodes unless they’re super old and I haven’t heard them.

If it’s a rebroadcast of something that was in the current 12-month period, I just delete them.

I’m super annoyed if it’s not obvious that I’ve already listened to it or that it’s a repeat and I start listening to it and I have that weird Deja Vu feeling like I feel like I’ve heard this before this sounds really familiar and then five minutes have gone by and I’m like, oh, this is… huh… Yep. Okay. I already heard this episode. Delete.

So if you are republishing something, just be sure that it’s clear and make sure that it makes sense to republish it content-wise and maybe don’t republish something that was super recent.

  7. Take the holiday time to do some community building on social media elsewhere besides your podcast. Maybe you can encourage your listeners to connect with you over social media instead of relying on the podcast, so they don’t lose that connection while they’re waiting for new content. In fact, maybe you even have time to produce a little bit of Premium content that is only available to your email subscribers or to your Facebook group members or to your Patreon supporters — a little holiday bonus.

Oh, I just gave myself that idea! I think I’m going to do that. (Okay holiday bonus for Podcast Envy email subscribers note to self.) Make sure you’re on my list here so you don’t miss out!

So don’t let the holiday time stress you out. Don’t let it send you into a panic or an existential crisis your show still matters. If your numbers go down during the holidays, don’t worry. It’s totally fine.

Save your juicy interviews for the new year perhaps or release on those weeks in between Thanksgiving and Christmas think consciously about what you want your first episode of the year to be don’t overthink, but think consciously about it.

Be creative with the energy that’s available to you in this holiday time. Think about your own self care. Don’t push to do something realistic for you.

You are Your Own Boss (even though I’m your Podcast Boss.) You’re still Your Own Boss.

Happy birthday to me this week Wednesday. I hope to hear from you ASAP for #podcastgratitude. I hope to see you on the Podcast Envy email list so I can send you a bonus and I’d love to see you for real, for real via Zoom meeting in either the Launch Pod or the VIP Circle in January of 2019.

Julie pulled me on board for this ambitious heartfelt initiative she founded that year called Women Podcasters in Solidarity — a collective of women podcasters who have made a pledge to build awareness and funds for social justice through their podcasting platforms. This is a twice-yearly, ongoing initiative with the first focus being on Anti-Racism and the Movement for Black Lives, and the second on Gun Safety with an Intersectional Lens (you can join now for the new season here).

I’m planning to contribute a series of episodes my high school podcasting students produced about gun control with Dion McGill of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence for Power Your Story.

In this episode of Podcast Envy, we talk about social justice, gun violence, the origin story of Mother’s Quest, how Julie produces her podcast, and finding joyful moments.

About Julie Neal & Mother’s Quest

Mother’s Quest Founder, Julie Neale honors both the meaning and the mess of life and parenthood and believes our children and youth challenge us to grow into our best selves. She is on a mission to live a truly E.P.I.C. life and, through her example, inspire her children to do the same.

Her “for-purpose” venture, Mother’s Quest, provides inspiration, coaching and community so that mothers, and those who work with young people, can connect to support and resources, fulfill their unique purpose, and live their E.P.I.C. lives.

After a 20-year career as a leader in youth-serving non-profit organizations, Julie turned her focus to coaching, training at the Coaches Training Institute, and facilitating a process known as “reflection” for youth development professionals.

Through this and her parenting experience, she realized that mothers, and those who mother, need an opportunity to reflect on their own growth, dreams, and plans and created Mother’s Quest to champion them.

With calm and care, she masterfully taps into her own curiosity and intuition, to help her clients slow down from the busyness of life and work, reflect on what matters, clarify a future vision, and move into action.

She writes about the transformative experience of parenting in her own life at mothersquest.com and in the Mother’s Quest Facebook community and hosts the Mother’s Quest Podcast, which launched in December 2106, recently releasing its 50th episode.

In the fall of 2017, she founded the Women Podcasters in Solidarity Initiative, to raise awareness and dollars for social justice issues through the power of podcasting. The first season focused on anti-racism and police accountability.  The episodes of those who contributed, including three from Mother’s Quest, can be found at www.womenpodcastersinsolidarity.com.

A fall 2018 season is focused on gun safety with new episodes to be released in January 2019.

Julie received her Masters in City Planning, Community Development from UC Berkeley and a BA in Communication Studies from UCLA, where she met her husband. She currently lives with her husband and two boys in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Julie and Jake - smaller

When she’s not wrestling with her kindergartener or driving her teen to basketball practice, you can find her squeezing in ten minutes of yoga and meditation (believing something is better than nothing!) and staying up way too late to watch a double-hitter of the Handmaids Tale and Super Soul Sunday.

Podcasting for Yoga Teachers

Teaching yoga can go so much deeper than just cueing a physical workout class — there is a certain way that a skillful teacher can use words and language and imagery to connect to  deep emotions and levels of awareness — It makes perfect sense that they could use their voices and the skill and this talent in the medium of podcasting.

Article

This episode was inspired by Shannon Crow of The Connected Yoga Teacher, who appeared right here on episode 033 of Podcast Envy, talking all about how to use podcasting as a medium for social impact beyond the impact that you can have as a local yoga teacher.

This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart because I am also a yoga teacher and though I don’t do it full time anymore, I spent a lot of time and energy and money and frustration and exhilaration learning how to teach yoga and meditation and getting a full education around the ins and outs of yoga business.

So I reached out to a panel of four podcasters who have been also teaching yoga anywhere from 2 to 15 years, and who each have a very different type of show. I’m excited to introduce to you:

Gabby Orcutt from Soul Speak

Amanda Kingsmith from M.B.Om

Kathryn Nicolai from Nothing much happens

and Natalia Hastings from Flow With Me Yoga

One thing that these yogi podcasters all have in common is that they each have a very distinct origin story for their show. I shouldn’t be surprised by this because I know that excellent yoga teachers know how to weave stories into their classes from their own personal experience in such a way that it resonates deeply with their students.

So it should not surprise me that these women have awesome origin stories and tons of wisdom on the following questions:

  • How did your podcast come to be?
  • Why did you decide to focus on the specific niche you’ve chosen (guided yoga practices; the business of yoga; bedtime stories to help you sleep, discussions about yoga, pregnancy and self-care)?
  • Does your podcast directly support your yoga teaching business and if so, in what way?
  • How do you measure success with your show?
  • How have you been growing your audience?
  • What has been your biggest podcasting challenge?
  • What is your best advice for a yoga teacher considering their own podcast?

I’ve gotta be honest — hearing these success stories and strategies and ideas-– I wish that when I had a yoga studio business and was teaching yoga and meditation full time, I had made a yoga podcast!

In fact, I had a client who asked me if I would ever consider doing such a thing because she loved taking my classes, but I really did not at that time even know what the heck a podcast was and since they were available for free, I couldn’t figure out how you make money off of one (money I desperately needed.) So I just dismissed it.

I feel like if I would have done it things might have ended differently for my yoga business, but I don’t know. Maybe we are right where we need to be and things happen the way they’re supposed to.

Don’t ghost your podcast listeners – Halloween Special!

Boo! In honor of the Halloween season, I’m serving up advice from our spooky supernatural friends, the ghosts!

Ghosting: When a person cuts off all communication with their friends or the person they’re dating, with zero warning or notice before hand. You’ll mostly see them avoiding friend’s phone calls, social media, and avoiding them in public.

courtesy urbandictionary.com
don't ghost your podcast listeners, podcasting advice, podcast envy episode 034

Imagine this…

You happily discover this new podcast and the first few episodes have you feeling hopeful. You can see the promise and potential for the future of this show. As the weeks go on, you feel more and more like you really know the host. You’re starting to trust them —  you even share the podcast with your friends, hoping they’ll like it too.

And then suddenly — you realize it’s been weeks since you’ve gotten a new episode in your queue. You check your app, make sure you’re still subscribed. You look on social — where are they? You go back and replay the last episode — did you miss something? You tweet them — crickets.

Time goes by.

Silence.

You feel lost, betrayed. What could have happened? You hope they’re okay… I mean it was going so well. The only way they could disappear like this is if they were dead in ditch somewhere, right?

Do NOT do this to your listeners…

PODCASTERS TO BE! I’m looking for you IF…

  • you are planning to launch your podcast in 2019
  • you want to shortcut your learning curve and get it out sooner than later
  • you value having your show sound and look professional from the beginning so you can grow from a solid foundation

Let’s launch your show together as part of an intimate group in the Podcast Envy Launch Pod — the hands on attention of my private 1×1 launch service for a fraction of the cost!

Article cont’d

I know, sometimes podcasting is frustrating. It’s a lot more work and takes more time than anyone ever lets on in the beginning. And there’s the whole downloads thing — Apple is not the promised land of instant subscribers and an immediate crowd of podcast fans. Your show may not be the overnight success you imagined it would be.

And as the weeks and months go on, you find yourself getting less and less excited to go into a closet with your microphone (or shell out for recording studio time if you are so lucky) to record.

Maybe it’s been ages since you got a review, a 5-star rating, an email from a listener or geez– at this rate even some hearts on your audiograms in Insta.

But trust me — your listeners are out there, and they need you.

So before you give up completely, here are a few things you can try…

1) Consider your WHY — Remember why you started podcasting in the first place. Assess what you are personally getting out of podcasting with or without large numbers?

2) If you’re feeling overwhelmed, how often are you releasing episodes? Could you scale back? Or could you make less work for yourself — maybe outsourcing something like editing or doing less detailed show notes.

3) If you’re getting bored, can you switch it up a bit, invite some guests if you don’t usually, do some solo shows if you usually have interviews, do a deep dive mini-series in a topic that feels current or interesting to you?

4) Remember, it just takes TIME to build — so much time. Especially if you didn’t start with a huge following. Plus, numbers are subjective. I don’t know what your numbers are but you MIGHT be surprised about how intimate the average listening audience is by comparison — most people who share their stats have freakishly high numbers that don’t represent the full picture of indie podcasters.

If you’re still over it…

Could you take a break and see if you miss it? And if you do, then come back in a month or 2 months? If you do this, be sure to announce it to your listeners! Be honest about your intentions and let them know how to stay connected with you in the meantime (like will you still be posting on Facebook or in your newsletter)?

And when you’re truly done…

Say a proper good-bye. It doesn’t have to be long, drawn out, and dramatic (unless that’s your style.) It doesn’t have to be apologetic or self-deprecating (unless THAT’S your style.) Just a simple, heartfelt, honest ending to give your loyal listeners some closure.

Let them know you appreciate them and the time they’ve spent listening to your show — maybe recommend some other shows you think they might like to check out (if that feels right to you) and as in the above tip, tell them how to stay connected to you (unless you’re going totally offline!)

Believe me, no one likes to be ghosted. To this day, I will never understand why it happens so so so much in the online dating world. But that’s an article perhaps for another time.

Treat your audience with the respect they deserve and it will leave a lasting impression that matters.

A Halloween gift for you!

This month, October 2018, over on my LinkedIn, I’m sharing podcasting tips, practices and fun all around a Halloween theme and I’m kicking it off with a Tarot Card spread for your Podcast Content Marketing Plan.

This is a nod to the nostalgic defining moment of my childhood when I won (or at least placed) in a costume contest at the public library for my gypsy fortune teller look. No tarot cards are NOT fortune telling but I didn’t know any better when I was 9!

So if YOU want to get the spread either to DIY with your own tarot or oracle deck OR you want me to do a 3-card reading for you and YOUR show, click the button below and drop your email there for me and you’ll get instructions and a super brief questionnaire in case you want me to pull cards for you.Get the Tarot Podcast Plan!

Shannon Crow, The Connected Yoga Teacher, on Social Impact and Podcasting

Shannon Crow from The Connected Yoga Teacher is with me on this episode to talk podcasting and social impact. Actually, she reached out to me originally to talk about impostor syndrome (one of my fave topics), so we cover that too!

Shannon Crow, The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast, Podcast Envy Episode 033, on Social Impact

I LOVE what Shannon is doing with her podcast, and even more so with her community of yoga teachers, the hub of which is her Facebook Group.

In fact, you may or may not know that before podcasting, my primary work was teaching yoga and meditation. I even owned and operated my own studio in Chicago for FIVE years and ultimately had to close because I just couldn’t find a way to make the business profitable and sustainable with the resources I had available.

My experience and observation is that yoga is TOUGH business model, and most of us teachers get into it because we have a passion for the practice, and for helping other people live healthier, more fulfilling lives. We get VERY little business or entrepreneurial training or guidance and then we bust our butts, struggling to make ends meet while running round teaching classes OR we make it a side hustle while holding down a full-time job or assortment of part-time jobs.

Shannon saw this gap and decided to do something about it. She’s hoping that what she can do to create a support network and resources for yoga teachers to have more sustainable business practices will ripple out to help so many more people through the classes and sessions those teachers hold.

Shannon Crow is definitely a podcaster using this platform to make a positive social impact. Whether you’re into yoga or not, there’s a lot you can learn from her. Listen to the episode to find out how she does it!

About Shannon

Shannon Crow is the host of The Connected Yoga Teacher podcast and a consultant for yoga teachers. She shares what she has learned (and continues to learn) as a yoga entrepreneur.

Shannon is passionate about this work so that yoga teachers have more time and energy to share the yoga that lights them up.

She became a yoga teacher in 2006 and continues to teach weekly group and private classes in Owen Sound, Ontario, with a specialty in Yoga for Pelvic Health.

Shannon is dedicated to helping yoga teachers define their niche and thrive at marketing. She thrives in a community that is playful, diverse, and supportive. This is what inspired her to create The Connected Yoga Teacher Facebook group.

Shannon offers in person and online teacher training. She is the co-founder of the MamaNurture Prenatal Yoga School and developed the Yoga for Pelvic Health Teacher Training.

In her spare time, Shannon can be found hiking or skiing on the Bruce Peninsula with her partner, Shawn and her three children. She enjoys time outside in the vegetable garden in the summer or skiing in the winter.

Shannon loves the quiet of morning with her tea, yoga mat and journal. She likes to laugh, visit with friends and family and ask a lot of questions.

Podcasting for TV and Movie Fans

We are talking all about Podcasting for TV Fans! Well… TV AND movies, specific shows AND genres… It’s all things “fan-casting!”

So full confession, fancasts are not a genre of podcast I typically listen to so after talking with Troy Heinritz of The Blacklist Exposed in episode 30, I got curious about what makes a good show, particularly the community building aspects because I think ALL OF US podcasters and aspiring podcasters can learn a lot from these producers.

To help me out, I enlisted the expertise of 4 show creators:

Shannon Entin of Stinger TV and Movie Podcast, Ozarks Dirty Laundry and The Supreme American Horror Story Podcast

Theo Burbank of Freaky Franchise

Ginger Wiseman of The Outlander Podcast AND The All Souls Podcast

Matt Marr of TV Tea Time, a Riverdale fancast — y’all know if you listen to my other show The Creative Impostor, I love Matt. He was featured on episode 072 of The Creative Impostor talking about vulnerability, being an artist and his other podcast The Dear Mattie Show.
