CI079: Admitting I’m scared

Every time I lose my voice to laryngitis, I have a fear that it won’t come back.

~Andrea Klunder

What are you scared of?

Having a major health crisis changes the lens on how you perceive things. Long-time fears can resurface with a vengeance and new ones you never considered before can materialize.

I was inspired to do this episode and post by Sarah Buino of the Conversations with a Wounded Healer podcast (which my team edits), who was inspired by the WNYC Studios podcast 10 Things That Scare Me.

If you’ve been following me this year, you know that I had a mastectomy and DIEP flap reconstruction of my left breast using abdominal tissue in March 2019 and then this month, a revision to those scars. This was in response to a diagnosis of stage 0 DCIS (pre-cancer) and there is nothing like the “c-word” to bring up FEAR.

When I heard Sarah’s short episode during editing, it hit me in a deep place and then I checked out 10 Things That Scare Me and it’s so simple and brilliant.

Naming the things that scare. It’s powerful.

Here’s my list (which is very different than what it would have been last year.)

1)    Big cats (tigers, lions, pumas, jaguars, panthers, etc)

2)    Ruining the planet

3)    Cancer

4)    Health insurance (or losing health insurance or inadequate coverage)

5)    That my body will never feel right again post-surgery

6)    Hurting someone deeply without meaning to, without realizing it, or without even remembering what I did (or didn’t do)

7)    Putting things off until never… working and working and working and realizing at the end of my life that none of it matters and that I put off the important things because I was too busy working

8)   Running out of money

9)   Getting old, becoming feeble, being dependent on others, and beging completely alone

10)  Losing my voice (and/or my hearing) — The episode I reference in relation to this one is from Invisibilia: The Prayer.

To hear more stories about the above list, for sure listen to the full episode.

CI078: Self-Care Impostor

It’s amazing to me how very hard we are on ourselves whenever healing is involved. Whether one has had a hysterectomy, a fibroid removed, given birth, or “just” had a broken bone set, we expect expediency… capitalism demands it… And consumerism has co-opted self-care to mean things like manicures, cupcake breaks, and long weekends.

~Lisa Widder

I AM A SELF-CARE IMPOSTOR!!!

Before I was a podcaster, I was a yoga teacher, and then a Thai Bodywork practitioner, and then a meditation teacher.

I owned a yoga studio for 5 years,

I led a yoga teacher training.

I lead musical mantra sessions, I blend essential oils, I practice tarot.

In fact MANY episodes of The Creative Impostor are about self-care — whether it’s me spouting off ideas and droplets of wisdom and practices or my guests sharing insights into different ways they take care of their creative selves and/or their clients…

I confess I feel like I was wrong about self-care.

I had never REALLY put it to the test.

’ll be sharing some specific insight into my own creative process and this will be leading up to a live storytelling event I’m part of in Chicago July 10th, called Pour One Out.

Article Continued

I mean sure, I had my appendix out several years ago,  I went to India and changed my diet and yoga practice after consulting with an Ayurvedic doctor, I dug myself out what was probably pretty mild depression after closing my yoga business, but I did not know the parameters or import of self-care til now.

And here I am. 13 weeks post surgery. 23 weeks post stage 0 pre-cancer in my breast and I am SO TIRED OF TALKING ABOUT THIS and thinking about this but I am IN IT. Deep.

Recovery does not happen in a 4-6 week window.

It is a long slow painful slog through the murk of my psyche, the breakdown and piecing back together of my body and well — who knows what else lies ahead b/c I can’t yet see the way out.

I want to share this email from a friend, colleague and community member… Lisa says,

“It’s amazing to me how very hard we are on ourselves whenever healing is involved. Whether one has had a hysterectomy, a fibroid removed, given birth, or “just” had a broken bone set, we expect expediency. I think capitalism demands it, has always demanded it. And consumerism has co-opted self-care to mean things like manicures, cupcake breaks, and long weekends. All of those are important (I love cupcake breaks!) but the heavy lifting is the stuff that you’re doing – the therapy, the massages, the PT. And, oh boy, does that stuff take time before the cumulative effects become apparent!”

If you follow me on Instagram or you’re in The Creative Impostor FB group you may know some of what I’ve been going through — like just the surface.

I’m doing physical therapy 4x per week for my arm and shoulder which I can’t extend above my head and hurts constantly since surgery. I’m seeing a massage therapist weekly for the same — and overall energetic rebalancing. I’ve received Reiki from friends. I just started working with a psychotherapist using this cool technique I stumbled upon called brainspotting.  And it’s all good and helpful but this self-care thing is becoming like a full-time job and I don’t always have the faith that I will ultimately be as good as I was before (let alone better.)

I find myself thinking of what has been lost, what has been taken away.

Like sure I have the new boob made out of my belly fat and in everyday settings you probably wouldn’t even notice anything different through my clothes. But it FEELS different (in fact I can’t really feel it at all – so it’ like this thing just stuck on my body that sometimes feels like it doesn’t belong.)

Really bizarre side note, go listen to an episode of one of my favorite podcasts Flash Forward with Rose Evelth. It’s called BODIES: Switcheroo — it’s about a potential future in which we have the ability to swap bodies with someone else (I know intense) and one of the things they touch on is how recipients of organ transplants often have a bizarre relationship to the newly transplanted organ.

Anyway it made me think of how I feel about the new breast EVEN THOUGH it came from my own body. It’s like my brain knows that’s not a breast and so it shouldn’t be there.

Also…

I find myself wanting to sleep ALL THE TIME. And then not feeling well rested when I do, but definitely falling behind in my work b/c of it (clients — close your ears!) This leads to me pushing myself to stay up until 2 or 3am to meet deadlines, because I was too foggy headed during the day or because I was in 3 back-to-back therapy appointments and then exhausted afterward.

And I KNOW That consistent sleep is like the #1 most important thing I should be prioritizing.

But like… I also have to work. Don’t I?!

And then back to this thing I began exploring in therapy of feeling like things are being taken away… I also just had a major double whammy disappointment professionally.

This year I applied to a program being offered by Google Podcasts and PRX (public radio exchange) — it was our second time applying for funding and mentorship — along with students from my high school mentoring program and podcast Power Your Story — we have a big vision for where we’d like to take that show as a resource for young people in the disability community and we can’t do it within our current budget and format constraints. INCREDIBLY we made it to the finals — From over 2000 applications, they selected 24 teams to interview (including us) and then they selected 6 slots.

Believe me when I tell you that this is THE ONLY THING I have cared about in my career since the surgery (current clients close your ears again)…. And we just found out we didn’t get it.

And then a week later my whole existing Power Your Story program which was supposed to pick up again in July just got shut down. Completely. For frustrating reasons (lack of admin support, data entry problems, issues with recruiting and logistics, my own failure to push things through, budget constraints…I don’t even really know.) And I don’t know whether we’ll be back in the fall. Or maybe it’s just done.

I felt the wind knocked out of me and then kicked when I was down.

I know some will say and have said that this is a blessing in disguise because I need the time and space to heal — to take care of me.

And I am practicing letting go — shifting my focus from what is gone to what will come because where there is a vacuum...

But alas…

I feel frustrated by my body’s apparent resistance to resetting itself and moving on.

I want to trust my intuition more, to take care of my body better, to listen to the messages I’m getting but they’re so fuzzy.

I want to be patient – (do I?) but I also just want my life back!

And I certainly don’t want my creative work, my career, my business to fall apart in the meantime.

Not long ago I received this awesome voice message from another friend, colleague and community member, Jennie, which I’ve included in the episode.

I’m sharing that (and Lisa’s email) with you because

  1. whether you realize it or not, you are part of such an awesome community in The Creative Impostor with really smart, creative, giving people
  2. I need to hear these things over and over and over — that I’m not alone in this, that other people get it, and there’s a way through
  3. Because feedback on teh work I’m doing, on the show, on our guests is SO IMPORTANT! Sometimes when I get busy with client work, I let my own shows and content slide to the back burner and it’s easy to feel like it really doesn’t matter whether I pick them back up again — or even when I am creating, I’m not totally sure where this is all landing. But messages like Jennie’s helps me to know I’m on the right track and keep me going.

Here are some ways I’d love to connect

PE044: Disappointment, or Pick Yourself

It’s a cultural instinct to wait to get picked. To seek out the permission and authority that comes from a publisher or talk show host or even a blogger saying, ‘I pick you.’

Seth Godin

You all — I’ve been bursting at the seams with this podcasting secret — my production team for Power Your Story made it to the TOP 24 FINALISTS of the Google Podcasts PRX Creator Program!!!!

Yeah — we had an interview with them and we were inches away from one of those 6 slots for teams to be chosen for up to $40K in funding plus awesome mentoring opportunity and… we didn’t get it.

I feel like a deflated balloon.

Article Cont’d

And then, double whammy, the organization that DOES fund the current version of our show pulled the plug on it for the summer and I’m not totally sure whether we’ll be back in the fall or whether the program is done.

So the wind got knocked out of me and then I got kicked when I was down.

This program has been THE ONLY THING I have been excited about since my surgery in March of this year. Like the pillar of what gives my work meaning and purpose. Okay… it’s not just that – all of my work has purpose or I wouldn’t do it but THIS, THIS was an opportunity to do something that would really stand out and make a difference.

And this double whammy really brought me to my knees. Actually it was more like a sobbing heap on the floor of my apartment — I think it was even raining that day.

Not this podcast boss’s finest hour.

But I know, I know ,I need to take my own advice from episode 43 — and not get distracted by those big bright shiny objects being dangled before the eyes of us indie podcasters who are trudging away over here.

As my senior Power Your Story producer Aliyah said when I delivered the news “There will be other opportunities. Just let me know when you find the next one.”

Honestly I have this loop playing in my head of Seth Godin’s voice (you know Seth, right? If not, go subscribe to Akimbo right after you finish listening to me.) “Stop waiting to be picked.”

On his blog he writes…

It’s a cultural instinct to wait to get picked. To seek out the permission and authority that comes from a publisher or talk show host or even a blogger saying, “I pick you.” Once you reject that impulse and realize that no one is going to select you–that Prince Charming has chosen another house–then you can actually get to work.

Seth Godin

In one of his fabulous books What to do When It’s Your Turn (and it’s always your turn) he has a page that says:

Avoid certainty.

Pick yourself.

Postpone gratification.

Seek joy.

Embrace generosity.

Dance with fear.

Be paranoid about mediocrity.

See the world as it is.

Be the boss of you.

That’s what I”m trying to do right now.

I’m creating my own opportunities, picking myself, and moving on to the next thing. (But I’m still sad.)

Endings, Beginnings, Gratitude and Podcasting

The end? The beginning?

The New Year can be a time of excitement, anxiety, FOMO and more. For ME… I decided several years ago to skip the usual holiday hoopla and focus on creating rituals for myself that mean something.

I’ll share one of those rituals below AND some voice gratitude from community members (both podcasters and listeners) but first… an announcement!

Thank you for being a loyal listener of Podcast Envy — I LOVE making this show for you and when I started it last year, it was with the intention of growing my podcast production, consulting and coaching business, The Creative Impostor Studios, and that has happened! Wow!

I can barely keep up and that is while I’ll be dropping back to publishing episodes every other week, rather than weekly. However, there is ONE way you can still get weekly content from me and that is by becoming a Podcast Angel!

Podcast Angels directly support this show and the content that I offer for FREE on this podcast and now YOU can become one, dear podcaster,  with the Podcast Envy VIP Circle…

FREE class in Chicago: Is My Business Ready for a Podcast?

Join me at Next Door Chicago Thursday January 29th!

Whether you are a solo entrepreneur, a small business leader, or a team member in a bigger organization, podcasting is a  popular trend for making connections, developing brand loyalty, and influencing social impact. You have a golden opportunity to influence listeners and get your message heard through one of the most powerfully intimate forms of media that exists today. But how do you know whether a podcast is right for you and your company?  What will it take to stand out from the thousands of shows that already exist? What do you need to be ready to start?

6:30-8:00pm @ Next Door Chicago

In this episode…

I’m sharing my favorite New Year’s Eve ritual.

Take out a piece of paper and number it from 1-108 (you can make 2 columns, use front & back, multiple sheets, or a REALLY big piece of paper.)

Now write down 108 things from the year that is ending for which you are grateful! It can be people, places, things, experiences, lessons learned, moments in time… anything goes!

Top of MY gratitude list this year — PODCASTING!

I invited our community to weigh in on WHY they are grateful for podcasts and you’ll hear what they have to say from both a listening perspective and a producing perspective!

I’ll give you some hints…

Learning, fresh perspectives, community, self-expression, fulfilling childhood dreams, sharing experiences, confidence, self-identify, and more.

Personally, I started podcasting because I HAD to.

It was never something I imagined I’d be doing — I didn’t even know what it WAS until maybe 2012, but it came to me at a time in my life when I was LOW. I had to close my first business, I was bankrupt, depressed, didn’t want to go back to a full-time job, had no resources to start a new business and didn’t even know who I was anymore.

But podcasting helped me rediscover all of that and more.

So here I am now, with a business I love, building community with you, expressing myself in a super rewarding way with a ton of autonomy and creativity. So thank YOU, for being part of that!

Social Impact & Podcasting with Elsie Escobar, She Podcasts & Libysn’s The Feed

It’s entirely possible that I wouldn’t be here, doing this, at least not in this specific way, if not for today’s guest, Elsie Escobar.

This episode is for you if you have ever wondered whether, why and how your show matters despite stats and downloads.

Elsie has been immersed in the field of podcasting since 2006, when she first began with Elsie’s Yoga Class, which has been downloaded over 4 million times. She currently co-hosts She Podcasts, both a podcast and the largest online community for women podcasters, as well as produces and co-hosts The Feed, Libsyn’s official podcast (Libsyn = the podcasting host I always use and recommend.)

Most recently, Elsie created a mentoring program called the E-League for impact driven podcasters around the central question…

HOW ARE WE OFFERING CONTENT THAT BUILDS A GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF OUR WORLD?

Elsie Escobar, The E-League

I could not imagine a series on Podcasting & Social Impact without including Elsie’s voice & expertise. This episode is JAM-PACKED so you’ll want to make a good cup of tea, grab a cozy blanked, a pen and a notebook and listen in to see what thoughts and ideas come to your mind.

The piece is Chapter VI – The Castle. Here’s some good commentary on his work.

Elsie also gives a DEEP DIVE case study analysis of the strategic success of a show called Pantsuit Politics. Check it out here.

And she mentions that YOU can email me anytime with feedback, suggestions, resources, ideas, questions. That the best of podcasts have an easy way to engage with listeners. It’s true! Here’s my email andrea [at] thecreativeimpostor.com.

Podcasting for Mamas featuring Moms With Dreams, Plus Mommy, Tilt Parenting, Joyful Courage

If you’re on the fence and thinking about creating a podcast, that means  there’s a message in your belly, there’s something that you have to say and believe me the world needs to hear you. They need to hear your message. They need to hear your voice. You matter and so does your message and I encourage you to do it, no matter what. Don’t talk yourself out of it.

Erica Blocker, Moms With Dreams

Today I have an incredible wisdom-packed episode for you and, no, that wisdom is not coming from me. That wisdom is coming from four dynamic, super smart, successful women leaders who have created podcasts in the niche of parenting and podcasts for moms.

Now wait! If you are not a mom or you are not podcasting about parenting or being a mom that does not mean you should not listen to this episode.

You should totally listen because I am not either of those two things and I learned so much from what these women have to share about marketing, niching around purpose, and positioning with their shows, and about something that they pretty much have to be masters of — TIME MANAGEMENT!

Featuring:

Erica Blocker from Moms with Dreams

Jen McLellan from Plus Mommy

Debbie Reber from TiLT Parenting

and Casey O’Roarty of Joyful Courage Parenting

Oh HEY! I’m on LinkedIn now… dropping pro podcasting tips, insights, and stories. Connect with me there and let me know you’re a Podcast Envy listener.

How do I know whether I (or my organization) is ready for a podcast?

Whether you are building a business, a brand, and organization or a personal following, podcasting is a super popular trend amongst companies, nonprofits, and, well, people in general.

It sounds so cool and on trend to say you have your own podcast, to imagine your voice being heard by thousands of people around the WORLD, and to know that you have a golden opportunity to influence those listeners through one of the most powerfully intimate forms of media that exists today.

There’s definitely a wave to ride and you’re right on the edge, waiting to catch it!

But how do you know whether you are ready?

It seems easy enough — you just record your voice and somehow publish it to the internet and voila! Right?

I mean I KNOW you don’t think it’s quite that simple — or you wouldn’t be here, listening to this right now.

So I have created a checklist of 6 questions to ask yourself (or your organization) before you dive into your podcasting adventure.

Listen in and read on for more…

Article Continued

Alright here are 6 questions to ask yourself to see whether you are ready to start your own podcast!

1) Do you have a clearly defined purpose?

What is your “why?” This questions feels so played out in the entrepreneurial digital marketing space but it’s KEY to success. And I’m going to ask you to go beyond, to build more awareness, market my business, get more clients, make more money. There are a million ways to do these things and some may be easier and cheaper and faster than a podcast. Listen , I’m not trying to talk you out of podcasting. Obvi it’s my FAVE way to do some of these things — so let me give you some examples…   speaking career, innovative way to document a process, grant fulfilment, create short easily digestible highly compelling anecdotal evidence for policy makers, expand beyond your brick & mortar local demographic for your potential business clientele, proof of concept – to test new product and service offering ideas for your client base, give back to your community, add another touch point for know like trust, idea leadership, re-purposeable audio content to build into a library, etc.

2) Do you know what your show is about?

Can you make a list of 10-15 episode topics or ideas… 50? 100? Have you tested it on other people (especially your ideal listeners?)

3) Do you know who your podcast is for?

And how you will find them? It’s not enough to say your podcast is for everyone.

“If it’s for everyone, then it’s for no one.”

Seth Godin

4) Have you decided when and where you will be recording?

This is kind of a 2-for-1 question — but you are definitely going to have to allocate time and create space for it.

This will help you more easily find the answers to common questions like: equipment, software, workflow, team and cost. If you want to record in a professional studio, that will cost you more, but you will cut your learning curve and won’t have to buy gear. If you want to DIY you are going to have to invest in some gear learn how to create your own sound dampening and add time to your process to learn how to use everything optimally. Also let’s not forget editing — the most time consuming part!

5) Do you have a budget and is it enough for what you want to create?

This can range from $300 all in (if you are DIYing a LOT) for a straightforward simply formatted show to upwards of $40K for a high concept professional produced show to EVEN MORE! The trade off is time — I always think of this triangle I saw once — Cost/Speed/Quality, or cheap/fast/good — you can have 2 but not all 3!

6) Have you assembled your team?

,It might be a team of 1 and that’s okay, but if you are a one-woman or one-man show and you have a whole other job to do within your organization, or your business to run, or a whole OTHER job and this is a side hustle — you will burn out fast if you don’t have the proper support.

Team members to consider…. host (if not you), co-host, guests, producer, editor, audio engineer, social media, show notes, VA, cheerleaders, evangelists, coach, mentor.

Every team will look different depending on the answers to questions 1-5!

Okay… how’d you do?

Let’s tally it up… how many “yes” answers do you have?

5-6 YES — You are READY! If you’re at 5, consider that last one for a bit and then what are you waiting for — let’s get that show launched!

3-4 — ALMOST — you’re so close!

1-2 — You’re off to a solid start — there’s still a bit of homework for you to do but if you’re committed, it won’t be long til you’re up on that surfboard.

0  — don’t worry — all is not lost! Spend some time with these questions, do a little research  — once you have 1, 2, and 3 solid on paper, 4-6 will come more easily.

And no matter WHERE you are, don’t forget, I can help!

CI073: Where Have I been? Updates & Invitations

I just sort of went into this existential crisis of — What is The Creative Impostor? Why do I need this show?

It has been a while since I have released an episode here for you. My last episode was this past summer with the fabulous Matt Marr. It was a really good one.

And now… I have to tell you something really strange has happened or is happening, which is that I did not plan to take a hiatus with this show.

In fact over on my other podcast, Podcast Envy, all about how to craft a show that matters, I have recently advised podcasters that if they are going to take a hiatus from their show, they should tell their listeners. They should announce it. They should set some expectations so that you’re not just leaving your listeners hanging and I did NOT do that myself.

Truth be told, I have been feeling guilty about it ever since I dispensed that oh so sage advice so I decided to come here just to check in and say hi. I haven’t forgotten you. I haven’t abandoned you. And I’m so so so happy and grateful that you have not abandoned me either and I know this because for some reason even though I have not released a new episode since summer, I have over a thousand downloads of The Creative Impostor per month since then — amazing!!!

So where HAVE I been and why the hiatus and what can you do if you miss me?

I’m here. I haven’t disappeared.

I’m producing Podcast Envy. If you are interested in the topic of podcasting specifically, there’s some really good stuff happening over on that show and you should definitely subscribe. I’m also over at Power Your Story and while it’s not me, it’s my high school student mentees who are producing that show and we have a ton of new content in the pipeline.

And I’ve been over at Key Change: Creating Opera For All Voices with the Santa Fe Opera. This is an integrated podcasting-opera-storytelling experience all about an initiative through the community outreach and education department at the Santa Fe Opera called Opera For All Voices, which is all about commissioning new works centered around diversity and inclusion and having the conversation about what diversity and inclusion means in the opera world and just in the arts world in the United States in general.

What does American Opera mean?

What does contemporary opera mean?

What does it look like?

What does it sound like?

What kinds of stories are we telling?

Who is telling those stories?

The first season is out now and where are in the depths of editing season 2, which will be coming out this spring. So there’s been a lot of work going on at The Creative Impostor STUDIOS and that is the primary reason for the hiatus on The Creative Impostor PODCAST.

The other reason became clear to me when I went on hiatus unexpectedly was that I am getting bored.

I mean not with the idea of The Creative Impostor, nor the brand, nor podcasting in general, but just the format. I mean, I’ve been doing it for a few years. I have some great interviews. I love doing interviews. I love doing the solo episodes. But now that I’m doing interviews over on Podcast Envy, it kind of feels like why do I have two shows? And in fact, I’ve been working with a business coach who is Robyn Conley Downs of the Feel Good Effect podcast (one of the podcasts that I edit.)

And Robyn actually said to me in a coaching, “Why do you have two shows? Do you need to have two shows? Maybe you should just focus on one.”

At first I was like, “NO! I can’t I can’t only have one. I can’t let go The Creative Impostor. That’s my baby. That’s my first show. I love that show and I have more listeners on that show!”

But from a business perspective, the show doesn’t really make that much sense anymore because my business has become specifically about supporting other podcasters and organizations and individuals who WANT to podcast.

And so I just sort of went into this existential crisis of what is The Creative Impostor? Why do I have it? Why do I need this show? What is different about it than Podcast Envy?

And I also have been thinking for a long time now that I’ve done a lot of interviews and I feel really comfortable and confident in this format and most podcasts that we listen to our either solo produced shows co-hosted shows or interview shows…

I keep thinking what else is possible with the medium of podcasting.

What else is possible in audio? I mean, yeah, we also have. Narrative fiction podcasts like Gimlet’s Homecoming and narrative nonfiction podcasts like Serial, but there has to be something else — some kind of experimental immersive audio experience.

I don’t know exactly what it is yet, but I want to do something really different.

I want to be more creative to be honest. So that’s where I’m going with this. More is coming. But I don’t know what and I don’t know.

In the meantime, here are a few ways that I would love to connect with you:

  1. Email me. Send me an email and let me know why you listen to the show. So no like formal survey or anything. Just email me. Why do you listen to the show? What do you love most about it or what do you get out of it? So that I can make sure that my new content direction is aligned with what you love and what you want and with you.
  2. Join my Facebook Community where we create social support for content creators with inspiring prompts, opportunities for you to share your work, talk about money and more.
  3. If you are thinking of starting your own podcast, consider doing it together with me and a few friends in the Podcast Envy Launch Pod starting January 2019.
  4. If you already HAVE a podcast and are ready to grow in a meaningful way and make connections, consider the VIP Circle.

Happy birthday to me this week Wednesday! I hope to hear from you ASAP for #podcastgratitude.  I’d love to see you for real, for real via Zoom meeting in either the Launch Pod or the VIP Circle in January of 2019.
