Podcasting for Mamas featuring Moms With Dreams, Plus Mommy, Tilt Parenting, Joyful Courage

If you’re on the fence and thinking about creating a podcast, that means  there’s a message in your belly, there’s something that you have to say and believe me the world needs to hear you. They need to hear your message. They need to hear your voice. You matter and so does your message and I encourage you to do it, no matter what. Don’t talk yourself out of it.

Erica Blocker, Moms With Dreams

Today I have an incredible wisdom-packed episode for you and, no, that wisdom is not coming from me. That wisdom is coming from four dynamic, super smart, successful women leaders who have created podcasts in the niche of parenting and podcasts for moms.

Now wait! If you are not a mom or you are not podcasting about parenting or being a mom that does not mean you should not listen to this episode.

You should totally listen because I am not either of those two things and I learned so much from what these women have to share about marketing, niching around purpose, and positioning with their shows, and about something that they pretty much have to be masters of — TIME MANAGEMENT!

Featuring:

Erica Blocker from Moms with Dreams

Jen McLellan from Plus Mommy

Debbie Reber from TiLT Parenting

and Casey O’Roarty of Joyful Courage Parenting

061: You are not alone, a tribute to my cat Tytania, and the power of community

“She has always been, among other things, a teacher to me… I learned a lot about patience, I learned a lot about meeting someone where they are… and also she taught me how to have unconditional love for her even when she was peeing on everything and wanted nothing to do with me.” ~Andrea Klunder

Grief, isolation, and the power of community in times of transition…

My muse, Tytania.

NEW! Podcast Envy, a podcast about podcasting

Launching this month… here’s a preview of the first episode…

Welcome to Podcast Envy, helping you make your show the envy of everyone else!

How?

Hint: It’s not about the microphone.

I’m Andrea Klunder, your podcast boss, and together we are going to learn the mindset, the technology, the secrets to aligning your show with your passion, power and purpose.

And I promise I’m not going to ever talk about “crushing it,” “10x-ing” or “6-figure overnight successes!” Ever.

058: Cultivate brave space, intentional community, Licia Berry, Lisa Nalbone, Wendy Parman, Isabelle Rizo, Emily Stroia Gold

“There’s something sacred about passing the microphone to each individual woman and what’s even MORE exciting and sacred is the way in which everyone was LISTENING to each other.” ~Andrea Klunder

In this episode, I have FIVE incredible women gathered to talk about intentional creative community and, of course, that pesky little impostor voice!

My guests!

Licia Berry… bestselling author, artist, speaker, mentor, women’s advocate, author of I Am Her Daughter*

Lisa Nalbone… educator, advocate for self-directed lifelong learning, author of Life Sparks

Wendy Parman… singer, actor, writer, voice teacher, creator of Callie’s Solo web series

Isabelle Rizo… business mentor for the next generation of successful female entrepreneurs, artist, filmmaker, facilitator of The Singularity Circle

Emily Stroia Gold… professional intuitive, spiritual medium, poet and author of Into the Light

Let me set the scene for you…

A cool, crisp fall day in Chicago. Six women, including myself, gather in my 2nd floor vintage walkup apartment. Many of us have only ever met online, but we’ve all been brought together for a single purpose.

We have tea and then we sit in a circle.

I have two microphones — one for me, and one that we pass around the circle as each woman shares her own story, ideas, and words of encouragement.

This is the closest thing to a wise women’s council that I’ve ever experienced. I feel that we’re sitting around the bonfire shaping the future of our culture and community ahead.

We talk about:

  • The bridge between online and offline space to create community
  • The Supernova personal art and storytelling event designed by Isabelle Rizo, for which we were all gathered
  • The importance and power of cultivating intentional community
  • Getting clear on your story, your why, what you want to create in the world, and also your boundaries
  • How our impostor voices show up and what we do about it

My professional experience includes 25 years in education and training, with keen interests in psychology, philosophy, neuroscience, fine art and learning styles.  My search has been to find a way to explain mystical experience through logical language. Through a grounded, practical and even scientific approach, I bring left brain language to right brain experiences (such as mystical experience).

My life, as well as my work in the world, is firmly centered in wholeness and balance.  The union of our inner feminine and masculine, or yin/yang, is accessed and our true power expressed through this attention to balance.  My interest in wholeness arises from my experience, which shows me that integrating all aspects of ourselves is the kind, compassionate course to an actualized, joyous life.

Do you want to see possibilities, adopt new mindsets and find resources to tackle challenges in your learning adventures?

I’ve felt your pain — as a student, a teacher, a mom, and a daughter.

Hi! I’m Lisa. My path was not always clear and the journey not always easy.

Over the years I’ve taught multiple subjects in elementary through high school, and outside the classroom I’ve coached children and adults in everything from math, college preparedness, to designing non traditional learning pathways to meet career goals. Today, I focus on coaching young people and the young at heart to identify and design a path to pursue their purpose. I also write, speak, and give workshops about the power of self-directed learning and how to use the LifeSparks A-Z strategies to reignite your – or your children’s or student’s love for learning..

I’ve published the LifeSPARKS Guide and Workbook with strategies for self-directed learning and am hard at work on a combination quarterly planner/journal to help you define and map your self-directed learning journey.

And of course, I am learning all the time, enthusiastically. Won’t you join me?

Originally from Kansas, Wendy graduated from the University of Kansas with a BFA in Theater/Voice, where she studied classical music and sang the roles of the Countess in The Marriage of  Figaro and Laetitia in The Old Maid and the Thief, and had the unique opportunity to study with  Z. Cynkutis,  one of the original actors from the  Grotowski ‘s renowned  Teatr Laboratorium, with a specially selected group of students. As an amateur scientist observing human behavior online and offline Isabelle noticed similarities between all humans. Our need for connection. Connection coming from integration with trauma. In online space where things were easily anonymous people would instantly connect – and she wanted to create that in offline space. From there Isabelle began integrating her online story with her offline reality by becoming a travel blogger, consultant, and strategist working remotely from various parts of Europe and North America.

Skipping the traditional college route and becoming an advocate of life-long learning, Isabelle integrated her learning journey into her culminating mentoring and strategy programs. How we as a society must not fear technology but integrate with it as singularity storytellers. Creating a smaller more connected world.

Through her multimedia art and curated experiences she intends conversation to be sparked, connections to be made, and deeper things to be moved. Her work and programs can be found at IsabelleRizo.com

056: Affirm yourself, Kelly Covert, Inner Voice Coach & Host of In Her Voice Podcast

“One minute does not change who I am.” ~Kelly Covert (upon reflecting over the disappointment of missing her triathlon personal record by one minute.)

Everything counts…

I met Kelly Covert online through a podcast mentoring program with Elsie Escobar (episode 044) and then in person at 2017 Podcast Movement and I LOVE Kelly’s presence. She is affirming, clear and joyful. She is an incredible listener AND she totally gets my type A, overachiever, creative perfectionist personality. I knew immediately she needed to be here on the show, talking with you!

In this episode we talk about the true inner voice you want to listen to (i.e. NOT the impostor voice or inner mean girl), daily practices for cultivating your connection to that voice and your deepest desires, overcoming perfectionism and recognizing your own inherent worth outside of achievement and productivity.

“If you never do another thing, you are worthy right now.” ~Kelly Covert

044: Break patterns & shift the narrative, Elsie Escobar

“It was, for me, a self-help tool. It was a way in which I experienced a very deep transformation in who I was as a woman — as a person.” ~Elsie Escobar, on podcasting

How do we, as content creators, begin to break the patterns and shift the narrative? It might not be what you think…

Elsie Escobar is one of my podcasting idols. Actor, yoga teacher, podcast producer & advocate (you can see why we connect with each other so well), her original podcast, Elsie’s Yoga Class was one of the first I ever listened to — before I even really knew what a podcast was!

Now, after listening to her for years and working one on one with Elsie through her E-League mentoring program, I have a whole new appreciation for the question, “What else is possible?” because for Elsie (and for me), podcasting is about so much more than downloads, sponsors and statistics.

And no matter what kind of content you are creating in the world, through social media, a blog, a podcast, videos, workshops, your business, your art, etc, YOU have the option to follow the pack or carve a whole new path to shift the conversation. Find out how, listen now…

“Go to the things that YOU really resonate with because that’s the conversation we need to have, and THEN you frame it on your point of view because that’s going to start to break patterns.” ~Elsie Escobar, on media consumption and creation

“The impact that [podcasting] had in my life — in my actual life, not in my business — but in my ability to become a better human was so huge that I was like ‘Everybody needs to get behind the mic.’ It’ll do things. It’ll do stuff to you.” ~Elsie Escobar

About Elsie

I WORK IN THE CROSS-SECTION OF TECHNOLOGY, DIGITAL MEDIA & HOLISTIC LIVING WITH A HEAVY BIAS ON PODCAST STRATEGY AND CREATIVE USE OF AUDIO.

As a podcaster since 2006, I was one of the first female indiepodcasters using audio to teach yoga. Elsie’s Yoga Class has now been downloaded over 4 million times!

I’m currently the only female pundit in the podcasting space with expert insight into indie podcasters’ impact, influence, and power.

My obsession for podcasting got me a job working with Libsyn, the leading podcast host and distribution network created in 2004.

I’ve been there since 2007 and have had the pleasure of working with hundreds of podcasters, sharing tools for better production, educating them in the fast moving podcasting space, as well as cultivating a strongly engaged community through The Feed: The Official Libsyn podcast which I both co-host and produce. The Feed’s sole focus is keeping people podcasting.

I also co-run the largest community for women in podcasting with a corresponding podcast (of course) called She Podcasts.

Our sole mission is to empower women to continue to share their voices while creating a safe community of podcasting education and support.

My biggest differentiator in the podcasting industry?

I’m a die-hard podcast junkie who lives, breathes and works the medium, and has since 2006.

I’ve pulsed with the space and grown from someone that had NO IDEA what a digital recorder was or how to record anything to someone that currently offers advice to thousands of people a month.

I have the unique perspective and expertise of a podcast listener, independent podcast producer, and podcasting industry analyst/personality.

I know the heart and soul of podcasters and podcasting well beyond iTunes and public media.

“CAN we reach and start to actually vibrate at a different level, to take that conversation, that dialogue, to a different place, to be able to offer… another option for self-development that is NOT based on a visual medium… that is NOT based on the way that somebody looks.” ~Elsie Escobar, on the potential of podcasting

037: Permission to stop

“I keep thinking I need to do more– That I need more clients. That I’m going to run out of money. That I need to keep pushing forward until I make it to… where exactly?” ~Andrea Klunder

Letting go of busy…

It has been a BUSY month filled with transitions and new things.

Of course I knew it would be because our theme for the last few weeks both in The Creative Impostor Facebook Group and in the Chicago Women’s Creative Collective has been Creative Woo-Woo: mystical practices for your creative workflow

I’ve interviewed Intuitive Counselor and Self-Discovery Coach Charlotte Elea about tarot and oracle cards for developing your intuition and Spiritual Embodiment Teacher Monica Martin about using your body’s felt-sense to guide your decision making.

AND I’ve done informal live video interviews with both of them in TheCreative Impostor FB group AND with Naturopath & Holistic Healer Samantha Mant (who will be on the podcast in the coming months) on coordinating your creative cycles with the moon and with feminine cycle.

Put all of these experiences together with the tarot readings I’ve been incorporating into my almost-daily meditation practice AND some very practical DEEP coaching I’ve been doing with the luminous podcasting guru Elsie Escobar as part of her new e-league mentoring program and…. whew!

“I’m getting all intuitive, introspective, one with the universe, aligned in my purpose – flow – flow – flow all OVER THE PLACE!” ~Andrea Klunder

It’s actually been so intense that I’m alternating between these bursts of manic creative insight where I can’t sleep and I’m up way late into the night — so late I hear the birds chirping in the pre-dawn darkness outside my window  And then these periods of deep sleep without an alarm clock, where I will sleep for 11 hours at a stretch.

And in between all of that are the client deadlines for projects new and old, the smattering of yoga and meditation classes I teach throughout the week, the orientations for the After School Matters podcasting program for high schoolers I’m creating and facilitating starting this summer, hosting and expanding the Chicago Women’s Creative Collective and producing this podcast.

Busy.

Are you exhausted just listening to this?

And this leads me back to my coaching with Elsie at the beginning of this month.

I asked her to help me figure out what to do next with The Creative Impostor, where I fit into the podcasting industry, how to leverage my unique gifts, skills and strengths for a sustainable purpose-driven business.

And here’s what she said to me first:

You have the ability to “become what is needed” in any situation— you have the solution for any problem.

BUT what do you want to do?

“I have everything I need. And now I have the luxury to let go of the hustle and spend some time focusing on what I want to do and create and who I want to be for a while.” ~Andrea Klunder

035: Impostor vs Intuition

“The impostor voice wants to protect you by keeping you small and safe. The intuitive voice wants to help you by elevating your platform to rise to the occasion. It may be risky. But it’s probably worth it.” ~Andrea Klunder

Your voice matters.

I’ve spent the past two weeks without my voice.

It comes in fits and starts — raspy, breathy, squeaky or barely audible. Though for a good 4 days, I couldn’t make a peep.

Laryngitis.

Every singer’s nightmare.

It used to happen to me a lot when I was in high school. My friends would tease me jovially saying, “Andrea, do your Joan Rivers voice!”

In college, it was less funny because for a while I was studying classical voice and losing your voice could mean missing a critical audition or failing a midterm.

What it looks like to teach a yoga class with no voice. Here’s what it means to me today.

95% of my fledgling business and the work I do that make up my livelihood rely upon my voice.

Imagine, if you will, a yoga class that I taught completely silently with a lovely meditative playlist in the background, poster-size flash cards, physical demonstration of each asana (pose) and a meditation bell to signal when it’s time to look up for the next poster.

Networking with Post-Its!

Networking with Post-Its!

Or a women’s forum and networking event where I happily sat in a booth and listened to the speakers but when it came time to mingle, I had only a stack of post-it notes, a pen and a smile. I even ordered water with no ice from the bar on a post-it!

Or the look on a 5-year-old camper’s face when she asked me a question and I had to squeak out that I lost my voice. She told me I was faking! Five minutes later, she reconsidered and asked with concern, “Did you really lose it? Where did it go?”

So I’ve been drinking herbal remedies by the gallon, steaming my face with eucalyptus, self-prescribing vocal rest and pouting a little… because, well, I feel limited.

It’s easy to slip into “oh-woe-is-me” mode or throw my hands up and say, “well it’s not my fault things have come to a grinding halt — I can’t speak!”

But that’s not useful.

What IS useful is to take advantage of this opportunity to pause, get quiet (ha!) and check what’s happening in and around me… to take stock. Like an obligatory silent meditation retreat!

Two days before I came down with the cold that spiraled into this voiceless state of being, I recorded a pre-season podcast episode of The Creative Impostor and talked about a spring cleaning of sorts I was doing in my professional life.

I had valiantly decided to pare down some of the services I’m offering in an effort to bring more focus and clarity to my personal brand (always a struggle for me because I like to dip my fingers in sooooo many different pots!)

The ultimate decision was that everything would center largely around my voice and supporting my clients, students and community in discovering and nurturing their own creative voices. I’m even designing a new training with the working title Reveal Your True Voice: an exploration of sound, mantra, and vocal confidence.

I felt FANTASTIC about that decision, my UVP (unique value proposition, or uniquely vibrant point of view) felt clear, strong and true. And then THIS.

My mind fluttered around from theory to theory and rationalization to rationalization.

Of course this would happen. Every time I try something new, it never works!

Maybe I’ve made a mistake and need to reconsider my direction.

It’s just a reminder to slow down and take better care of myself.

Perhaps the universe is testing my resolve to see how much I believe in this purpose.

Purely coincidence, there’s no lesson here. It sucks, just wait it out.

Who am I without my voice?

Oh God, what if this is it and my voice NEVER comes back?!

It got to the point where my boyfriend said he kept thinking I was mad at him because I wouldn’t talk and that he missed the sound of my voice.

Besides being super sweet, it made me realize how much of how people perceive us is dependent upon our voice. There is a lot of focus in our society right now on content, the WHAT of the conversation. But maybe what’s more important is even just the sound of our voice, HOW things are being said.

Nowhere is that more apparent than in the world of podcasting. As I’ve listened to hundreds of podcasts at this point, I’ve realized that the ones I come back to time and again are the ones with the best combination of engaging content and superb audio quality including the sound of the host’s voice.

There are voices I can fall asleep to and voices that energize me, voices that soothe and voices that inspire. And then there are voices that irritate me so much, I’m hard pressed to tune in again even if I really want to know what they have to say.

So I guess that’s the point.

Your voice matters.

My voice matters.

And that’s really all I have to say.
