Podcasting for Mamas featuring Moms With Dreams, Plus Mommy, Tilt Parenting, Joyful Courage

If you’re on the fence and thinking about creating a podcast, that means  there’s a message in your belly, there’s something that you have to say and believe me the world needs to hear you. They need to hear your message. They need to hear your voice. You matter and so does your message and I encourage you to do it, no matter what. Don’t talk yourself out of it.

Erica Blocker, Moms With Dreams

Today I have an incredible wisdom-packed episode for you and, no, that wisdom is not coming from me. That wisdom is coming from four dynamic, super smart, successful women leaders who have created podcasts in the niche of parenting and podcasts for moms.

Now wait! If you are not a mom or you are not podcasting about parenting or being a mom that does not mean you should not listen to this episode.

You should totally listen because I am not either of those two things and I learned so much from what these women have to share about marketing, niching around purpose, and positioning with their shows, and about something that they pretty much have to be masters of — TIME MANAGEMENT!

Featuring:

Erica Blocker from Moms with Dreams

Jen McLellan from Plus Mommy

Debbie Reber from TiLT Parenting

and Casey O’Roarty of Joyful Courage Parenting

Article cont’d

Julie pulled me on board for this ambitious heartfelt initiative she founded that year called Women Podcasters in Solidarity — a collective of women podcasters who have made a pledge to build awareness and funds for social justice through their podcasting platforms. This is a twice-yearly, ongoing initiative with the first focus being on Anti-Racism and the Movement for Black Lives, and the second on Gun Safety with an Intersectional Lens (you can join now for the new season here).

I’m planning to contribute a series of episodes my high school podcasting students produced about gun control with Dion McGill of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence for Power Your Story.

In this episode of Podcast Envy, we talk about social justice, gun violence, the origin story of Mother’s Quest, how Julie produces her podcast, and finding joyful moments.

About Julie Neal & Mother’s Quest

Mother’s Quest Founder, Julie Neale honors both the meaning and the mess of life and parenthood and believes our children and youth challenge us to grow into our best selves. She is on a mission to live a truly E.P.I.C. life and, through her example, inspire her children to do the same.

Her “for-purpose” venture, Mother’s Quest, provides inspiration, coaching and community so that mothers, and those who work with young people, can connect to support and resources, fulfill their unique purpose, and live their E.P.I.C. lives.

After a 20-year career as a leader in youth-serving non-profit organizations, Julie turned her focus to coaching, training at the Coaches Training Institute, and facilitating a process known as “reflection” for youth development professionals.

Through this and her parenting experience, she realized that mothers, and those who mother, need an opportunity to reflect on their own growth, dreams, and plans and created Mother’s Quest to champion them.

With calm and care, she masterfully taps into her own curiosity and intuition, to help her clients slow down from the busyness of life and work, reflect on what matters, clarify a future vision, and move into action.

She writes about the transformative experience of parenting in her own life at mothersquest.com and in the Mother’s Quest Facebook community and hosts the Mother’s Quest Podcast, which launched in December 2106, recently releasing its 50th episode.

In the fall of 2017, she founded the Women Podcasters in Solidarity Initiative, to raise awareness and dollars for social justice issues through the power of podcasting. The first season focused on anti-racism and police accountability.  The episodes of those who contributed, including three from Mother’s Quest, can be found at www.womenpodcastersinsolidarity.com.

A fall 2018 season is focused on gun safety with new episodes to be released in January 2019.

Julie received her Masters in City Planning, Community Development from UC Berkeley and a BA in Communication Studies from UCLA, where she met her husband. She currently lives with her husband and two boys in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Julie and Jake - smaller

When she’s not wrestling with her kindergartener or driving her teen to basketball practice, you can find her squeezing in ten minutes of yoga and meditation (believing something is better than nothing!) and staying up way too late to watch a double-hitter of the Handmaids Tale and Super Soul Sunday.

Shannon Crow, The Connected Yoga Teacher, on Social Impact and Podcasting

Shannon Crow from The Connected Yoga Teacher is with me on this episode to talk podcasting and social impact. Actually, she reached out to me originally to talk about impostor syndrome (one of my fave topics), so we cover that too!

Shannon Crow, The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast, Podcast Envy Episode 033, on Social Impact

I LOVE what Shannon is doing with her podcast, and even more so with her community of yoga teachers, the hub of which is her Facebook Group.

In fact, you may or may not know that before podcasting, my primary work was teaching yoga and meditation. I even owned and operated my own studio in Chicago for FIVE years and ultimately had to close because I just couldn’t find a way to make the business profitable and sustainable with the resources I had available.

My experience and observation is that yoga is TOUGH business model, and most of us teachers get into it because we have a passion for the practice, and for helping other people live healthier, more fulfilling lives. We get VERY little business or entrepreneurial training or guidance and then we bust our butts, struggling to make ends meet while running round teaching classes OR we make it a side hustle while holding down a full-time job or assortment of part-time jobs.

Shannon saw this gap and decided to do something about it. She’s hoping that what she can do to create a support network and resources for yoga teachers to have more sustainable business practices will ripple out to help so many more people through the classes and sessions those teachers hold.

Shannon Crow is definitely a podcaster using this platform to make a positive social impact. Whether you’re into yoga or not, there’s a lot you can learn from her. Listen to the episode to find out how she does it!

About Shannon

Shannon Crow is the host of The Connected Yoga Teacher podcast and a consultant for yoga teachers. She shares what she has learned (and continues to learn) as a yoga entrepreneur.

Shannon is passionate about this work so that yoga teachers have more time and energy to share the yoga that lights them up.

She became a yoga teacher in 2006 and continues to teach weekly group and private classes in Owen Sound, Ontario, with a specialty in Yoga for Pelvic Health.

Shannon is dedicated to helping yoga teachers define their niche and thrive at marketing. She thrives in a community that is playful, diverse, and supportive. This is what inspired her to create The Connected Yoga Teacher Facebook group.

Shannon offers in person and online teacher training. She is the co-founder of the MamaNurture Prenatal Yoga School and developed the Yoga for Pelvic Health Teacher Training.

In her spare time, Shannon can be found hiking or skiing on the Bruce Peninsula with her partner, Shawn and her three children. She enjoys time outside in the vegetable garden in the summer or skiing in the winter.

Shannon loves the quiet of morning with her tea, yoga mat and journal. She likes to laugh, visit with friends and family and ask a lot of questions.

070: Do one thing that’s completely different, Monica Rivera, You Wanna Do What?! the Podcast

“But everyone keeps saying just find your passion — find that one thing and follow your bliss and I thought well… I have a bunch of passions, so which passion are we talking about? And that’s why I kept feeling really stuck in that decision of needing to pick one thing.” ~Monica Rivera

I’m obsessed with podcasts and I always want MORE so there’s this thing I do once a week in the She Podcasts Facebook Group on Wednesdays. I scroll through a VERY long thread of new podcast episodes by other women podcasters and pick a few I’ve never heard of to check out.

Most of the time, I decide they’re not for me but every once in a while, a show really stands out and I fall in love.

That’s what happened with Monica’s podcast: You Wanna Do What?!

When I first heard it, I thought, “I want to to be friends with this woman.”

Her show feels so motivating without feeling coachy or preachy or overwhelming. And I’m so happy to be getting to know her and introduce her to you!

2 stories that stand out in this interview:

1) How Monica got into podcasting

2) How she was inspired by her grandmother not to wait to try new things

Listen to Monica’s podcast You Wanna Do What?!
I love episode 045: Are You Really Living?

“I am comparing myself to myself… what I think I should be doing versus what I am doing, which I think is the worst kind because you’re with yourself all the time. So you’re constantly almost at war if you let yourself be.” ~Monica Rivera

“And some days honestly, I just have to sit in that space and let me feel it and just kind of go through it of kind of beating myself up a little bit and then the next day hoping that it gets better, but I never try to force myself out of something that I’m feeling.” ~Monica Rivera

069: Flip the script, Robyn Conley Downs, Feel Good Effect, mindset, podcasting & what it really means to be healthy

“I had to be able to sit there in that uncomfortable place of this is not as good as I want it to be — and that’s okay.” ~Robyn Conley Downs

I discovered Robyn when she needed a podcast editor for her new show the Feel Good Effect. That was a year ago and since then, I have listened in detail to every single one of her episodes and she continues to amaze me with her big heart, inquisitive mind, business savvy, and seemingly superhuman ability to “do it all.”

As we discuss in this episode, there’s nothing superhuman about it and, in reality, there’s a give and take to everything. In fact, in terms of mindset, one of Robyn’s favorite sayings is “gentle is the new perfect.”

I love it and you’re going to love Robyn.

067: Seek out tranquility, Kimberly Wilson, Tranquility du Jour

“The connecting thread for me is the idea of tranquility… it’s not because I have it all figured out. It’s because I’m always seeking it out too.” ~Kimberly Wilson

Yoga. Mindfulness. Eco Fashion. Writing. Podcast. Conscious Business E-course. Psychotherapy. A charitable foundation called Pigs & Pugs… Kimberly Wilson has created the multi-passionate lifestyle brand of my dreams! (only my foundation would be more like Sloths & Cats… doesn’t have the same ring…)

I’ve been following Kimberly ever since I was a struggling yoga studio owner in 2009 and I sought out her help through her Conscious business e-course and a private coaching.

She told me to start a podcast (among other things.) And years later, I did.

About Susan

I’m Susan M. Chu. One of my biggest passions in life is living a feng shui life.

I was in corporate America for about 20 years, in the banking industry. I excelled in my jobs and made excellent money. But, somewhere along the way, I lost my feng shui values. I stopped living the feng shui life. Over time…

  • I was struggling, financially
  • My career stalled
  • I was in a dead end relationship
  • My health was deteriorating
  • And I couldn’t manifest any magical opportunities anymore

I was a total mess. I had hit my rock bottom. I took a long, hard look at myself and what came next was a total shocker to me. I quit my very cushy job. I didn’t quite bounce right back up, but when I did, I had rediscovered the magic in feng shui living. I have an unshakeable deep peace within myself; my inner child could not stop laughing when I rediscovered the feng shui way; I manifested so many helpful people that I can’t even recognize my life from when I quit my job; and I finally attained a quiet mind.

I stopped passing judgement on myself. The saboteur within me got a new job. Whenever I step off the feng shui path, it will lead me back.

There are a lot of people who accept life as being difficult. There are a lot of people who are conditioned to believe that you should struggle through life. I disagree. For me, life is about attaining inner peace and conquering life challenges. What I see is many people trying to find some semblance of peace in a very chaotic world.

It is so wonderful to sing to my favorite songs and not hear “Please, don’t sing. You can’t sing. from within me.

My clients include a wide variety of professionals: entrepreneurs, artists, expectant moms, corporate professionals, etc…. What they all have in common is they want to change their life, believe the Universe will work with them, and are ready to do whatever it takes. Our work together helps them attract the right relationships (mentors, teachers, and partners); inspires passion for their careers; and enlightens them to love their lives. It can do the same for you.

If you are ready to step into that life and commit to loving your life, I’d love to schedule a complimentary 15 minute call. Please email me at: info@susanmchu.com.

Feng shui living is a way of life. It embraces synchronicity with Heaven, peace within ourselves (man), and harmony with our environment (Earth). Many centuries of feng shui wisdom flows through me. I am here to share everything I know to transform your struggles into opportunities and to help you reach your dreams.

065: A remedy for not enough

“She asked me how could I express gratitude. My first thought was “to whom?” But she meant… gratitude to mySELF.” ~Andrea Klunder

Pause, take a deep breath, lift your head, and look around…

I just released an episode in my new-ish podcast about the craft of podcasting, Podcast Envy, about downloads, numbers, stats, etc and you probably know already how I feel about using those metrics as a measure for success from my Creative Impostor episode 57: What do numbers have to do with success?

And I propose a question that applies to areas of life and work beyond podcasting, which is — if these numerical metrics were to disappear…

If you could not easily see how many followers you had on Facebook or Instagram, how many people liked your picture, or retweeted your post. If you had no idea how many people were subscribed to your email newsletter or opened it or unsubscribed. If you did not have a head count for the audience of your talk or your show… If you did not see an actual number…

… how would YOU measure success? How would you value your OWN work?

Sometimes I feel like my own numbers are too small. Like I’m working and working and working and no one notices or cares. Like I’ll never reach that critical mass of followers where suddenly the conversion statistics  come out to actual sales of services and I can actually earn a sustainable comfortable income off of the content I create and the work that I do.

And sometimes I feel like a fraud, teaching podcasting classes, encouraging hundreds of other people to create a podcast and being positioned as the “expert” or making recommendations on gear, equipment and software when certainly there are other people out there who know more in that department than I do.

And I keep putting myself out there despite those feelings.

064: Stay in the room, Stacey Herrera, Sex, Money, Creativity, The Sensuality Project

“Self-consciousness is the assassin of authenticity.” ~Stacey Herrera

Stacey Herrera is the producer and host of the podcast The Sensuality Project. I love it, it makes me blush and it makes me think about topics we often don’t get to talk about in a constructive way. And I don’t mean just sex — but what the experience of being in this physical, sensual body is like; relationships; permission, consent and boundaries; social norms and prejudices; and so much more.

Stacey is facilitating a premium community JUST FOR these kinds of conversations amongst “sister friends”: The Sense & Sexability Society

 {This episode includes explicit language. Listener discretion advised.}

In this episode, we talk about:

  • The difference between sensuality and sexuality
  • Why it’s so important for us to normalize and talk about sex
  • The connection between sex, money and creativity
  • Our chakras (energy!) and our sexuality
  • Impostor syndrome manifesting as self-consciousness
  • Advice from Stacey!

“If you’re worried about what the other person is thinking, intimacy cannot happen… you have to be willing to be vulnerable.” ~Stacey Herrera

About Stacey

Stacey Herrera, The Sensuality Project

I’m Stacey, a native Angelino, who loves to talk.! And sex happens to be one of my favorite subjects. I am seeker and my default setting is optimistic.

I believe that deliciousness is about life, not taste.
I am not a size 2 and I don’t wear stilettos.
I believe that beauty is not a look, but a feeling.
I believe that sexy is not an article of clothing, but the embodiment of vivacity. And that sexy is also a subjective term that applies to everyone.
I also believe that every woman deserves a lover who makes her wet. That the work she does should make her nipples hard. And that she should be aroused by some aspect of her life on a daily basis.

But I know what it feels like to have a full plate. When there are not enough hours in a day to accommodate all the things that need to be done. There was a time when self-care was a conversation and not something I routinely practiced. Family, friends, work… people relied on me. And I got tired. Tired of trying to keep all the balls in the air. Tired of being spread so thin. Tired of being everything to everybody. Tired of being tired.

I was working  job that sucked the life out of me on a daily basis. I could not build my own business because I was too busy wearing a cape. I became resentful. Then I got sick. I stressed myself to the point of developing an illness that caused blindness in my left eye.

I had to lose my sight in order to regain my vision.

But you don’t have to…

You CAN make different choices now. You CAN have it all without losing your sh*t. You CAN live a turned-on life without giving up the things and the people you love.

And I can help you do that… www.StaceyHerrera.com
