049: Change, Connection, Magic and the Death Card

“A lot of times we start things… we set a big goal, we create a big vision for ourselves, and we announce it on Facebook… and then somewhere along the way, it gets difficult, we meet with that resistance, we start falling short…” ~Andrea Klunder

It’s the murky, muddy middle…

Our theme for the upcoming month is all about working with Coaches to help navigate resistance to change. In this episode, hear what I’m feeling resistance around these days and get the scoop on what I WANT to do next.

“The Death card represents an opportunity — a strong call toward transformation, setting something aside, letting it go and moving into something new even if it feels scary, even if it feels uncertain.” ~Andrea Klunder

042: Come over and play

“There’s a very blurry line between making art and working when your art is your life and your passion is your art and your art becomes your business and your business is work… it’s a tricky cycle.” ~Andrea Klunder

Self-promotion & Play like Oil & Water? Maybe not…

When I was a kid, the other kids on the block would get frustrated because rather than just riding bikes together, I always wanted to creates some structure and do things like make them play traffic cop.

Not a lot has changed, in that even as an adult, I have a tendency to turn my creative passions into hard work.

But what happens when forces in your life, your community, your clients, and even your tarot cards conspire to get you out of your rut and just play?

Find out…

“At first I was like, “ugh, I have so much work to do this weekend, I don’t have time to screw around in the forest preserve, shooting slow motion video for what purpose I have no idea.”” ~Andrea Klunder

“And I thought to myself yes these women totally get it. This is what podcasting CAN be all about — an extension of your creative expression and art to be able to reach new audiences and build community around that creative spark — and invitation for others to come over and play with you.” ~Andrea Klunder

038: Revisit Nikki Nigl: Make a list

“There is no wrong answer. The right answer is YOUR answer… It goes back to listening… it’s not just about listening with your ears, but listening with your heart.” ~Nikki Nigl

The power of podcasting, the potential of social media…

If you have been listening to The Creative Impostor from day 1 (sometime in 2015), then:

a) YOU ARE MY HERO!!! HUZZAH!!!!! Seriously, thank you, and…

b) you have heard a version of this episode before (episode #2 with Nikki Nigl) and can skip directly to thecreativeimpostor.com/magic where you can get started on my How to Start (anything) audio course to help you start whatever creative project or endeavor you need help starting or re-starting if you’ve gotten stuck.

Make sense?

Just do it!

And if you have never listened to my interview with Nikki Nigl in episode 2, or if you can’t remember the brilliant words of wisdom from the lips of this dynamic, women’s empowHERment coach, then tune in! I have re-edited our conversation to include the MOST relevant, most engaging, most entertaining bits of our talk.

And I have to say it’s pretty interesting to go back and listen to one of my early interviews and see how much EVERYTHING has changed and grown and improved about the way I interview and the way I edit.

Back then, I really had no idea what I was doing and I felt like a total impostor when I interviewed Nikki b/c actually we had never even met in real life. I had been cyberstalking her (in the most benevolent way) b/c I caught sight of this event series that she produces called About Women through mutual Facebook friends.

See Facebook IS good for some things!

And to my surprise and delight, she agreed to do an interview with me even though I had not yet launched the podcast and she had no idea who on earth I was.

Thanks for taking a leap of faith, Nikki!

Since that time in 2015, I have attended many of her About Women events, spoken at at LEAST four of them, used her Question of the Day in her Facebook group as a journal/self-study prompt I have no idea how often, have marched for women’s solidarity in Washington DC with her and I’m sure in another 2 year’s time, I will be able to add many more connections and interactions with Nikki to this list.

I want to say that this is the power of podcasting, the potential of social media — to create community in new and unexpected ways.

And this is what The Creative Impostor has been becoming!

I want to extend that same opportunity to you.

Listen to Nikki’s story about how she has started so many things (including About Women) by concentrating on the “what” rather than the how… which is the inspiration for step one of the How to Start (anything) audio course.

Then get the course, listen to step one, make a big old list of EVERYTHING you want to do or create in work or in life, and then share it with us in The Creative Impostor FB group, and who knows what new connections, collaborations, business, and creative works will come to be as a result.

We begin by discussing what Nikki does in her “real job “ as a women’s empowHERment coach. And yes, she DOES get paid for this… you’ll see when you listen to her interview.

Nikki Nigl (rhymes with eagle) has lived coast to coast, drawing inspiration and following her own simple credo, “to enjoy life to the fullest,” and aspires to help others do the same.

Possessed by her Midwest sensibility, West Coast calm and East Coast edge, Nikki has dedicated her life to motivating the masses with a no-nonsense but understanding approach. She’s qualified as a Public Speaking Instructor, Accountability Coach, Relationship Guru, Female EmpowHERment Coach (via public speaking), Life Manager, Weight-loss Coach, and overall cheerleader. Nikki says simply: “I will make your life better and easier.” And probably more fun.

Her list of accomplishments include talking Catwoman down from a ledge, showing Morticia Addams the bright side of things, and fielding calls from June Cleaver — Nikki’s the reason Bridget Jones even has a diary! (Now if she could only get Hello Kitty to smile.)

Loyal believer, role model, friend, artist, teacher, and always a student, Nikki is also a rarity and a treasure — and wants you to know that you are too.

037: Permission to stop

“I keep thinking I need to do more– That I need more clients. That I’m going to run out of money. That I need to keep pushing forward until I make it to… where exactly?” ~Andrea Klunder

Letting go of busy…

It has been a BUSY month filled with transitions and new things.

Of course I knew it would be because our theme for the last few weeks both in The Creative Impostor Facebook Group and in the Chicago Women’s Creative Collective has been Creative Woo-Woo: mystical practices for your creative workflow

I’ve interviewed Intuitive Counselor and Self-Discovery Coach Charlotte Elea about tarot and oracle cards for developing your intuition and Spiritual Embodiment Teacher Monica Martin about using your body’s felt-sense to guide your decision making.

AND I’ve done informal live video interviews with both of them in TheCreative Impostor FB group AND with Naturopath & Holistic Healer Samantha Mant (who will be on the podcast in the coming months) on coordinating your creative cycles with the moon and with feminine cycle.

Put all of these experiences together with the tarot readings I’ve been incorporating into my almost-daily meditation practice AND some very practical DEEP coaching I’ve been doing with the luminous podcasting guru Elsie Escobar as part of her new e-league mentoring program and…. whew!

“I’m getting all intuitive, introspective, one with the universe, aligned in my purpose – flow – flow – flow all OVER THE PLACE!” ~Andrea Klunder

It’s actually been so intense that I’m alternating between these bursts of manic creative insight where I can’t sleep and I’m up way late into the night — so late I hear the birds chirping in the pre-dawn darkness outside my window  And then these periods of deep sleep without an alarm clock, where I will sleep for 11 hours at a stretch.

And in between all of that are the client deadlines for projects new and old, the smattering of yoga and meditation classes I teach throughout the week, the orientations for the After School Matters podcasting program for high schoolers I’m creating and facilitating starting this summer, hosting and expanding the Chicago Women’s Creative Collective and producing this podcast.

Busy.

Are you exhausted just listening to this?

And this leads me back to my coaching with Elsie at the beginning of this month.

I asked her to help me figure out what to do next with The Creative Impostor, where I fit into the podcasting industry, how to leverage my unique gifts, skills and strengths for a sustainable purpose-driven business.

And here’s what she said to me first:

You have the ability to “become what is needed” in any situation— you have the solution for any problem.

BUT what do you want to do?

“I have everything I need. And now I have the luxury to let go of the hustle and spend some time focusing on what I want to do and create and who I want to be for a while.” ~Andrea Klunder

035: Impostor vs Intuition

“The impostor voice wants to protect you by keeping you small and safe. The intuitive voice wants to help you by elevating your platform to rise to the occasion. It may be risky. But it’s probably worth it.” ~Andrea Klunder

So when you have both the voice of your creative impostor AND the voice of your deepest intuition clamoring for attention in your brain, how on earth do you know who is saying what and who to listen to?

Well, you need mad tools, skills and support!

033: How podcasting & meditation saved me…

“I eventually came to a turning point where I realized that from here, anything was possible. I started listening to entrepreneurial podcasts, and financial podcasts, creativity podcasts and “how-to-podcast” podcasts… I was able to shift my view just enough from “no options” to “infinite options!” ~Andrea Klunder

How podcasting and meditation saved me from bankruptcy, depression and impostor syndrome…

I launched my first business in 2008. Infuse Yoga Spa was my vision for an urban oasis of holistic health, wellbeing and community in the middle of the concrete jungle of Chicago. I wrote a business plan, quit my “day job” of 8 years in arts administration and took the leap with confidence, energy, a little bit of savings and a generous loan from my parents and two uncles.

5 years later, in 2013, I locked the door to the beautiful vintage storefront for the last time, dropped the keys through the mail slot, drove the Zipcar packed with my last few personal items halfway to my new apartment and then pulled over underneath the el train tracks to sob uncontrollably, saying good-bye at last to my dream.

What followed was an intense period of mourning and probably the first time I have ever truly experienced depression. I was bankrupt, not eating well, at a loss for what to do next and, in fact, completely uninspired to do much of anything, especially teach yoga. Most days I just wanted to stay under the covers and hide.

One thing I was doing was listening to podcasts. It was a form of escapism that somehow felt more productive and less dismal than watching Netflix. Podcasts like Elsie’s Yoga Class and Tranquility du Jour with Kimberly Wilson helped me meditate on days I really didn’t feel like meditating and imagine the lifestyle I really wanted to create for myself (and had somehow missed the mark on with my yoga business.)

In fact, Tranquility du Jour is the first podcast I ever listened to (back before I even knew what a podcast was.) At the early signs that my business was in trouble, a friend and colleague recommended I check out Kimberly’s website because there was something about her multi-passionate brand that reminded my friend of me. See Kimberly is not just a podcaster, she’s a yoga teacher & studio owner in the DC area. She’s a writer, a fashion designer, a counselor and she leads these incredible retreats all around the world.

I used to listen to her podcast on her website (until I learned about the whole iTunes thing) and eventually, I purchased her Conscious Business e-course along with a 60min private phone coaching. Kimberly gave me a lot of ideas, one of which was to consider starting my own podcast so I could expand my business model outside of the confines of the brick & mortar yoga studio in Chicago and start building a global audience and potential client base. In fact, my meditation teacher, Elesa Commerse, had been giving me similar “get out of the yoga studio box” counsel for months.

But at that time, I was so busy just trying to keep the box afloat… launch a podcast?! Great idea, but not right now.

So what happened next? Listen to Episode 033 and find out!

“Of course, there’s always going to be challenge and risk and failure and now I can finally add to that something that looks like success to me.” ~Andrea Klunder

032: Engage your curiosity, Jennifer Gardner of RoamHowl

I really enjoy… confronting the fear… going through it, because I find that’s where life is.  It’s confronting what you’re most terrified of and working through it and getting to the other side of that. So I’m confronting my fear all the time. ~Jennifer Gardner

The thrill of the “doing”…

I met Jennifer Gardner because she took a risk. Already a litigating lawyer with a thriving private practice in Los Angeles, Jennifer (who is also an outstanding photographer BTW), decided to follow her curiosity and create a podcast, called RoamHowl. And she reached out to me, someone whose show she had heard, but whom she had never met for help in launching!

RoamHowl is a series of conversations with multi-talented, multi-passionate people doing really cool, interesting things.

Jennifer is out to discover stories and communicate them to help her listeners “find their pack” and to debunk the myth that you either are creative or you’re not, and to show that you are not defined solely by your profession — but you can in, in fact, be more.

It’s just been miles and miles of clicks that led me to this place… just curiosity, following this lead, following that lead and now, here I am!  ~Jennifer Gardner, on discovering podcasts, resources, and connections online

It’s the way I choose to be engaged with the world. I love to get a pedicure and a facial,  but those are the things that suffer. I don’t neglect my health, but pedicures and manicures? I don’t have time for that! ~Jennifer Gardner, on managing her time, professional & creative pursuits

We talk about…

Launching a podcast & working together on RoamHowl

How Jennifer balances her many passions and finds the time to accomplish so much

Confronting her fears on a daily basis to grow and experience life and how that vulnerability opens the possibility to connect with everyone she comes in contact with

Creativity in her legal work, which some people would not necessarily think of as a creative profession

Traveling to El Salvador, in risky circumstances, for her social documentary photography

Working in male-dominated fields and how she’s had to work harder than her male counterparts

Our current social/political environment and its impact on Jennifer’s legal work and on the art world

I love the adrenaline rush… I get to enter people’s lives, really examine the interior, the details, immerse myself in it, feel what it’s like, communicate about it in a passionate way and then step outside of it and go back to my own life. ~Jennifer Gardner, on the similarity between podcasting, documentary portraiture & lawyering

Jennifer Gardner

Lawyer. Podcast Producer. Photographer. Artist.

I am a perpetual student of life and the arts and a trial lawyer with a creative approach to helping my clients. Forever insatiably curious about the world and people in it, I created RoamHowl as a way to explore and share with you the stories of people who inspire me — multi-talented creative professionals with a unique approach to life and work.   I want to look under the hood and discover what inspires them, how they got to where they are, their fears, successes and failures.   I want to destroy the myth that “professionals” are not “creative,” and vice versa. I believe that top performers work using both sides of their brains.  So let’s find out how they became who they are today. By listening to them my goal is that we are inspired to do the next big out-of-the-box thing in our own lives.

031: Your Shadow & Mine

“When you are operating from the acceptance of your whole self, YOU get to choose your path and actions freely, because there is nothing behind you from which you are running.” ~Andrea Klunder, on liberation from the Shadow

What are all the things about yourself that you would NEVER share on social media?

Ever since editing my interview with artist Sara Zalek in Episode 030, this topic of the Shadow Self has been nagging at me because it comes up a LOT in the type of work I do and I always THINK I want to explore it but…

This Shadow is also deeply complicit with impostor syndrome to stop me from working on creating new content or developing marketing strategies or recording episodes.

For example, these days, I tell myself I’m going to work on my forthcoming Podcast Envy training program and course in the evening and then I walk through the door and feel sleepy, my head is cloudy and all I can think about is dinner, a bath and snuggling up next to my kitty to CONSUME content (rather than create.) And I end stuffing down my own shadowy self watching a newly engrossing glossy TV series about OTHER peoples’/characters’ shadow sides on Netflix or HBO… (Big Little Lies anyone?)

And then I feel like a failure.

The thing I love most and also the hardest thing about entrepreneurship and sustaining creative ventures like this podcast is that you cannot do it (and keep doing it) without at some point having to really take a hard look at yourself, delve deeply into this shadow, understand it, learn to work with it and then… grow.

I remember lamenting to one of my best friends on the phone after a particularly difficult season of rejections and failures both of personal and professional nature… “God, haven’t I grown enough yet?! I’m sick of it. When do I just get to coast?”

So what is this Shadow of which I speak? Listen to Episode 031 and find out!

“It brought up ALL the insecurities, frustration, self-doubt and anxiety over every moment I have ever felt invisible in my life.” ~Andrea Klunder

Meditation questions to ask yourself

  1. What am I most afraid of right now?
  2. What have I been putting off doing and why?
  3. What would I never want other people to know about me?
  4. What would I never want to share on social media?
  5. What have I been criticizing OTHER people for doing or not doing?
  6. What are the qualities that I admire in other people?

NEW! Online Master Class: Metta Meditation

Do you ever feel isolated — like you’re living, working and creating inside a vacuum?
Do you get frustrated, angry, anxious, or disappointed with others or with yourself?
Have you tried meditation and just can’t get your mind to be quiet?

I know how it feels. I’ve been meditating since the late 90’s and teaching for over 10 years and my mind still runs away with me at times.

And yet…

Metta is a simple meditation technique that can be practiced anytime, anywhere to free you from these feelings of disconnection and decrease your stress levels by expanding your awareness of kindness and compassion in every day interactions.

It helps you fine tune your deep listening and perception skills so you can connect better with the people in your life and nurture a sense of community in your world.

It gives your busy mind ONE point of focus toward which you can direct your attention, rather than trying to “clear” your mind or simply stop thinking (which we know doesn’t really work anyway!)

And I have made it EASY for you to learn what to do, why it works, when it’s most effective and HOW on earth to integrate it into your full life schedule so you can drop in, get connected and be clear in any situation.

Monday, September 26th @ 8:00pm CST
